Running a sports club can be fun and rewarding. But just how do you go about launching a club? Below are some tips on how to get your sports club off the ground.

Choose a sport you love

It’s important to be passionate about the sport that you choose to start a club in. Running a club is a big commitment and you need to be willing to make this sport a big part of your life. Ideally, you should already be heavily involved in the sport and be looking for your next challenge.

Select your demographic

What age range will your club be aimed at? Will it be aimed at boys, girls or mixed genders? You should select a demographic that you feel comfortable working with and that you feel there is an audience for in your local area.

Seek out funding

Starting a sports club may require some upfront costs such as licensing, equipment purchase and venue hire. Decide whether you need to seek out funding for these costs. This could be in the form of a loan. Alternatively, there may be local grants you can apply for.

Achieve necessary certification

Not all sports clubs require certification to start. However, if you want your club to take part in official sports association competitions or leagues, you will usually need some kind of certificate to start your own club. This may involve taking a coaching course such as a tennis coaching course. You may also be required to register your club in order for it to be seen as official.

Find a club venue

Where will you host your club? The type of premises you need is likely to depend on the nature of the sport that you’re coaching. Many sports will require an indoor venue – sports halls within gyms, community centres and schools are a popular choice, but you may also be to consider village halls and church halls. When it comes to outdoor venues, some public parks may be possible to use for free, while pitches will usually need to be rented out. Compare fees and make sure the venue has all the right facilities.

Determine the time of your club

You also need to consider when you will host your club. Will it be once per week? And if so, which day? Evenings and weekends are a good choice, because this is when most people are available. Of course, you also need to make sure that the venue is available during these times.

Consider custom kits

A custom kit will make your team feel more official. There are websites online such as this netball kit designer website that allow you to design your own kit. Choose a kit that will stand out among other clubs in the area.

Promote your club

Only by promoting your club will you get members joining. Start a social media page, post flyers through people’s doors, create a website and consider creating posters. When creating a brand for your club, try to make it stand out from other local clubs.
