Concerned mother, Izzy Spears, launches children’s book series, “The Adventures of Jaylen Newman when her son approached her disappointed that no one on television resembled him.
“Mommy, how come no one looks like me on t.v.?”, were the words her young boy uttered. With a heart filled with pain, a mother did all she could do.
“I decided I had to do something. I did all I could do at the time. I sat down and created “The Adventures of Jaylen Newman”, stated Izzy.
“I feel it is important for young boys and girls of color to have something positive that resembles themselves.”, Izzy said with a smile on her face.
After taking a good look at the television shows her son was watching and the books that he enjoyed reading, Izzy realized that her son did not have any characters that resembled him or his lifestyle.
Izzy has made it known that she wants to change the conversation centered around people of color. “We have educated people in our families, we have love and support for one another. I wanted to create something that reflected the home I grew up in, the home we are providing for our son. The media often portrays people of color as gangsters, thugs, villains, criminals and trouble makers. I want our children to know we are more.” Izzy stated full of passion.
