Start New Family Traditions

December 1, 2017 by Kaneshia

by Frank Griffin

With minimal effort, families can come together  and build enduring memories.

Here are some ideas for activities in the Birmingham area. And remember, the point is to bring the family together, explore new possibilities, have fun, and of course build wonderful memories.

Take a Cooking Class Together

Taking a cooking class as a family is an incredibly great way to build lifelong memories. You will acquire a skill that will last forever, learn about new cultures, and have fun in the process.

You can go to this link (https://www.thumbtack.com/al/birmingham/cooking-classes/ ) to find a wide range of chefs from Birmingham that provide cooking classes in your home or another setting.

Yoga for the Family

Just like cooking, this is one skill set with lifelong benefits. The great thing about this activity is many yoga studios have introductory packages for the whole family that are affordable. Village Yoga is one of the many places you can try. http://villageryoga.com/

Visit the Birmingham Botanical Gardens

If you really want to escape while still in the city, visit the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. First of all, it is free (but you can always support them because they do great work), and it provides 67 acres of incredible gardens. You can make a day of it and learn more than you bargained for.

Here is their website https://www.bbgardens.org/gardens-culture.php#Bruno

Start Gardening

If you feel inspired by your visit to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, you can start your own garden with flowers, vegetables, and herbs. This brings all of the above activities together. The Oak Street Garden Shop has been around for 25 years. It has everything from seasonal plants and flowers to garden shrubs, herbs, and vegetables. Here is their website http://oakstreetgardenshop.com/

Go on a Hike as a Family

Going for a hike is another opportunity to bond as a family while appreciating nature. Ruffner Mountain covers 1,038-acres, and it is one of the largest privately held 501 (c) (3) urban nature preserves in the country. Just like the botanical gardens, the trails are free but the experiences it provides are invaluable. Here is their site: https://ruffnermountain.org/

Making memories with your family doesn’t require an expensive activity. The most important thing is to spend time together.
