When The Women of Curly Girl Collective Get Together – Black Girl Magic Happens

September 23, 2019 by Izzy Spears

Curly Girl Collective Left to Right: Simone Mair, Charisse Higgins, Tracey Coleman,  Izzy Spears, Melody Henderson, and Gia Lowe

This year, the fifth annual CURLFEST was held in Atlanta, Georgia, for the first time ever! This annual celebration of curly, kinky, coily hair is brought to us with all it’s Black Girl Magic, by the Curly Girl Collective.

The Curly Girl Collective started out as a group of five women hosting small events around New York City. It was never in their wildest dreams that their events would grow to over 30,000 attendees each year, with people attending from over 35 countries around the world.

A Large Dose of Melanin and Natural Hair

I was completely unaware of how much I needed CURLFEST in my life. Being on that open field, filled with hundreds of beautiful women uplifting each other was electric. One of my favorite parts was jamming to the smooth mixes of the female DJs. That’s right, all the DJs were female!

Unique, Fierce and Slaying

Every woman had a head full of beautiful, unique strands of curly, kinky, wavy, coily hair. It felt good to see a group of women come together to celebrate the natural beauty we were all born with. It was even more inspiring to speak with the women of the Curly Girl Collective.

Simone, co- founder of CURLFEST, made sure to put an emphasis on the welcoming nature of CURLFEST.

“We have created an inclusive space, we want you to find value in yourself,” stated Simone.

“CURLEFEST is a gathering of friends and family,” stated Charisse Higgins.

It is clear that CURLFEST is not just a festival, but a movement of self-love, acceptance and discovery. The ladies of the Curly Girl Collective work hard  to “Be The Change We Wish To See in The World” , stated Simone. Simone went on to confirm that CURLFEST was created for us! Representation is important, especially for the younger generation.
