What Is Emotional Intelligence And Do You Have All 5 Dimensions?

This is an adapted excerpt from Michael S. Seaver’s book, “I Know, A Practical Guide for Awakening to What’s Within and Finding Work-Life Integration.”

What does emotional intelligence (EQ) have to do with how we spend our time and live our missions? A lot, really. Growing your emotional intelligence helps you to know if you are ready to take action to become more aligned with who you actually are. It is also a powerful way to shed stale emotions or behaviors. EQ skills help you better manage your time in service of better living your life’s mission. Emotional intelligence is defined by TTISI as “the ability to sense, understand and effectively apply the power of acumen of your emotions to facilitate higher levels of collaboration and productivity.”

When not knowing what to do next, clarity comes from reviewing the five components of EQ. Let’s explore Five methods of growing your emotional intelligence:

1. Self-Awareness: The ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others.

2. Self-Regulation: The ability to control or redirect disruptive impulses and moods and the propensity to suspend judgment and think before acting.

3. Motivation: A passion to work for reasons that go beyond external drives and are based on an internal drive or propensity to pursue goals with energy and persistence.

4. Social Awareness: The ability to understand the emotional makeup of other people and how your words and actions affect others.

5. Social Regulation: The ability to influence the emotional clarity of others through a proficiency in managing relationships and building networks.
